Very recently, but none too late, I applied and was accepted in the concurrent graduate studies at Utah State University. What that means is that I will add one year of school on my life, graduating in the spring of 2011 instead of 2010, and I will have a Master's Degree in addition to my Bachelor's. Very exciting, I know, but now I have come to the point in time where I really ought to decide what I want to be doing and where I want to go with all this schooling.
My two preferable choices in terms of subject matter are Control Systems and Signal Processing. Control systems, from what I know, involves robots. Signal processing involves the way all signals are utilized but not so much how they are sent and received, that is more of electromagnetics. But this decision is minor, and only involves the difference of one or two classes, the real decision is the difference between a Master of Science and a Master of Engineering. A Master of Science would require me to write a thesis with or without a project. A Master of Engineering would be more coursework but no thesis. I'm leaning toward the ME just because I'd rather not do research but is there a real difference? I hear that there isn't. Anyway, I've been sorting my classes out and been working through this conundrum. Any ideas?

From an article in the NYTimes about fee increases:
Two months ago, students at Utah State voted to increase their yearly athletic fee to $243, from $113, to help cover a $2.3 million deficit in the operation of varsity sports. Scott Barnes, the athletic director, said officials sought to persuade students that competitive athletics would increase enrollment, donations and visibility.
“Athletics are the front porch of the university,” Mr. Barnes said. “It’s not the most important room in the house, but it is the most visible.”
Yeah, and that's the only justification the school gave. They increased revenue by 33% and spending by 55%, creating a deficit and expect us to foot the bill! Don't even get me started!
